Project Update: Clara – A Dual Spiral Trefoil Knot in Carrara Marble

Clara is a dual spiral trefoil knot carved from Carrara marble. It stands one meter tall. The form is precise and flowing, like a quiet echo of music. Named after Clara Schumann.

Clara is one of four different sculptures in progress. One will be chosen for a 2026 Sotheby’s auction.

The spirals twist in balance. From some angles, they resemble a musical symbol. Clara is being carved in Carrara, Italy. Below are images showing its making.

Selected Carrara Marble Block

This is the Carrara marble block chosen for Clara. The white stone has fine veins and a smooth texture. It was selected in Carrara, Italy, for its quality and strength—just right for carving the dual spiral trefoil knot.

Transporting the Block to the Carving Facility

The Carrara marble block, now cut to size, is on its way to the robot-assisted carving facility. Here, machines will begin the rough shaping of Clara. The main curves and structure will be formed, ready for the fine hand-carving to come.

Arriving at the Carrara Studio for Fine Carving

The sculpture, now complete with its rough carving, is transported to the next phase of its creation at the Carrara studio. Here, skilled artisans will begin the finer carving work, refining the delicate curves of Clara to achieve the smooth, polished finish that defines the final piece.
